EVALUATION QUESTION 1
QUESTION 1; In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Difficulties when editing:
When editing we came across the following difficulty's.
- Diegetic Sound; Our filming picked up a lot of noise that made our opening look less professional. To work our way around this we spent a lot of time cutting, and clipping clips, and ensuring to reduce the background noise and it other sections, by enhancing tother sounds, to ensure the continuity and fluency between the visuals and sound wasn't effected.
- Non digetic Sound : We used a wide range of sound effects that were layered over the lullaby that we created. This helped to collaborate the different pieces of work together. Ensuring that the timing of the sound effects were well fitting and matched to the lullaby's strict melody and pattern of tune took a long time to edit the two together.
- Font size and colour: A lot of the colours of the font we either felt was too bright, to dark, or either to vibrant to fit to the genre of or opening scene, so were not appropriate. It also took a long time to find a relevant font that added creepy mood. However, when watching back the scene and receiving feedback, we felt that with the comments, the font was not appropriate as it was not noticeable enough, so we changed the font again to best match our narrative.
- The brightness and filters: When editing this was a big problem we felt as a few of the different clips were shot with very different brightness's, and we didn't want this to effect the continuety. Therefore, we edited the brightness of the different clips to become darker, but roughly the same darkness to fit the eerie mood and atmosphere. Then layering with different effects after, we decided was very effective and helped add to the eerie atmosphere.

Film opening deconstruction and analysis
Development from the Preliminary:
From the preliminary experiment, Our group has made a lot of progress, visually, standard of clarity and focus, narrative development, and we gained more understanding of how to use different camera angles.
Applying techniques to the narrative:
We strongly focused on the Mis en scene of our opening scene. The idea behind horror is that it is meant to play with your fears and create an effect of the audience being scared or uncomfortable, and create dark, gloomy, and eerie to fit the horror scene. We correctly chose an isolated brick garage location, to help show the girls are very isolated and hidden.
Lighting:
Horror themes often, have a stereotypically dark setting, whether outside in a dark forest, or inside a dimly lit house, as this helps the audience to feel on edge and frightened. When shooting in the garage we had to cover the two windows too prevent lots of light shining through. We used a slightly tinted yellow light in order to cause shadows as an effective.
Props:
Props that we used all related to the stereotypical theme of horror, and linked to our narrative such as a kidney dish and fake blood, screws, smaller plyers, books and skeletons.
Makeup:
When looking at the makeup we bruises to the girls faces to portrayed them being abused. We tried to make the victims look like they have been in captivity for ages by making their hair scruffy.
Angles
Our camera angles we used from our preliminary, our use of angles expanded. For example, we used POV shots, as if it was the vision of the protagonist to build the atmosphere. We ensured all of our shots were in focus and clear.
Rule of thirds:
We decided instead of using the rule of thirds, we kept the model in the mid shot so she wasn't portrayed as the dominant character. When the girl is screaming there is a zoom, leading away from the protagonist to show more about her being in captivity.
Montage/ continuity:
The majority of our opening scene is a montage, which consisted of a variation of shot that were all edited together to show a passing time and different scenes all in one. Therefore, when looking at the continuity we focused more on the placement of objects.
Dissolve:
When looking at editing we used a dissolve method where one scene fades to the next.
Filters:
As a group we used a lot of different filters to change the darkness and colours of different shots which helped added to the narrative and create more eerie vibes.
Sound:
When looking at the sound used we used a range of sound effects and non diegetic effects along with our lullaby. We did not have any dialogue so the sound effects and lullaby helped to balance out the negative sound. A very short sound bridge was used right at the end, when leading into the forest scene and linked with screaming to help the scene flow smoother.

Certificate Rating of film "Grind"
After researching the BBFC's age classifications it was clear that our film would have a certificate rating of 15. This is because it
best-fits the category's including; imitable behaviour, language, nudity, threat and violence.
Highly scary or
gory horror films that might upset younger children are unlikely to be found at
U, PG or 12A/12. Along with scenes with harmful material or which children are
encouraged to do dangerous things. The British Board of Film Classification(BBFC)
was founded by the film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national
classification and censorship of films exhibited at cinemas etc. When aimed at a
younger audience horror movies must be treated very cautiously to match the
public audience’s approval. This is so they don’t break the guidelines if it
had a recommended to an age too low it wouldn’t be appropriate. In 1993, the BBFC
hosted series of test screening of a film 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' to
which they observed the audience’s reactions. After analysing the reactions,
they decided the age rating was appropriate at PG (parental guidance). After
this, many films could use light horror elements with it being appropriate. However
when we looked at this we still felt that our horror film would not be deemed “Light
horror”.
The categories of a 15 rating our film falls under;
- Imitable behaviour: "Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Whether the depiction of easily accessible weapons is acceptable will depend on factors such as realism, context and setting."
- Threat "There may be strong threat and horror. A sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat is unlikely to be acceptable."
- Violence "Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but the depiction of sexual violence must be discreet and justified by context."
- Language "There may be strong language. Very strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification."
- Nudity "There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context. There may be nudity in a sexual context but usually without strong detail."

Technology used an how:
We used the following technology; iPhone 6, iMovie, Canon Camera.
iPhone 6:
When recording the sound for our lullaby we used my iPhone 6, this is because it had the best quality sound. When recording on my iPhone we used the 'Voice memos' app. We then emailed the voice recordings we were happy with. Then downloaded it and then transferred onto iMovie, where we cut, cropped and developed the lullaby sound to best fit the eerie atmosphere we wanted to create.
iMovie:

To put together the final product we used iMovie. This software, works for apple computer, and is one of the best editing software's, and working together with clear shots was exciting to put together.
iMovie, helps to blend sound, layer on sound effects and different uses of noise whether on not we have recorded it ourselves or have got it online.
iMovie also helps with editing, in terms of putting filters onto the different shots to make it look more aesthetically pleasing. It also helps for alterations of the saturation and contrast to make the scenes look more realistic.
CANON CAMERA
In order to film our final product we used a canon camera. This technology allowed us to zoom in and out of the shot and create the clearest shots.
As technology is developing, the demand for clearer shooting and better standard of filming is increasing.
The Canon camera allowed us to chance the focus of our shots.
We also used a tripod to make sure the camera maintained steady and in focus.

Final sound- LULLABY
For our opening scenes montage, when filming our experimental sound we decided that the quality of the recording and the theme of the words were appropriate, fully relating to the context and the style we were aiming to achieve.
Lyrics:
(We chose the following the lyrics as they relate to our narrative)
Verse 1:
Hush little baby don't you dare, Daddy will give you a good nightmare.
And if that nightmare doesn't work, Daddy will give you a true stern word.
And if those stern words don't work out, Daddy will make you scream and shout.
Interplay words:
Shhhhhhhhh, Daddy won't like that... (3 seconds)
STOP, he's coming! (2 seconds)
Verse 2:
Hush little baby don't you worry, Daddy will be there in a hurry.
And if he doesn't see you there, You will get tied to the chair.
Interplay words:
Shhhhhhhhh, Daddy won't like that... (3 seconds)
STOO (interrupted by humming)
Verse 3:
humhumhumhumhumhumhum, humhumhumhumhumhumhum, humhumhumhumhumhumhum, humhumhumhumhumhumhum, humhumhumhumhumhumhum
Verse 4:
lalalalalalala, lalalalalalala, lalalalalalala, lalalalalalala, lalalalalalala
Makeup and Costume For scenes
Scene of Girl wrapped in a chair
Costume
- I (model) started out in black leggings and a white bando so there wasn't lots of material to cover with bandages.
- Firstly I was wrapped in plain white toilet paper to get the basic white layer covering all my skin. We had to improvise with the toilet paper as it was going to be too expensive to cover my whole body in 2 layers of bandages, on our budget.
- My hair was tied back in a tight plait to prevent it getting in the way. We then put up in a swimming hat so that my head was easy to cover in bandages and my hair was completely out the way.
- Next we used damp white tape to hold the toilet paper in place, as it was easily breakable (we decided against using sellotape, as the shine would reflect on the camera).
- We then went over the toilet paper with white bandages, adding them to my face to cover everything apart from my eyes. This also made the toilet paper tighter creating the look I was thinner.
- Lastly blood was added around my mouth to help portray the idea that my teeth had been taken out- linking back to our narrative.
Makeup- Creating Bruising to the Eyes!!
- Firstly a base of pale foundation was added to my face to help create a starved and ill effect.
- Next dark concealer was worked into creases in my face to help portray me as ill and starved.
- To add bruising around my face and eyes shades of blue, purple, browns, reds and orange eyeshadows were used.
- An Eyebrow pencil was used to create more bushy eyebrows to make them look un-kept and overgrown.
- Lastly an over layer of a clear powder was added around my eyes to get rid of any shine that might appear on the camera from the eyeshadow.
Scenes of Girls in the brick room.
Makeup- creating bruising to the face and neck!!
- These girls are acting the victims, so I needed to create the feeling they have been in captivity for a while, I wanted to present the girls as abused and exhausted.
- To make the girls look ill and create a feel they have been starved, I started off using a base of extremely pale foundation on their faces to create this effect.
- After this to extend the exhausted and tired look I wanted to create, I worked a dark concealer into creases in the face. This helped to create bags and tired looking skin.
- Then I wanted to create bruising around the face and eyes using shades of blue, purple, browns, reds and oranges of eyeshadow.
- I then Added mascara onto the eyelashes, clogging the lashes together to create the feel her eye have been punched/crying/ add to the bruising feel.
- Left there eyebrows bare!!!
- Lastly we added an over layer of a clear powder to get rid of any shine that might appear and reflect on the camera from the eyeshadow, to make the makeup look more realistic on film.
Costume- none!
- Made sure there bra straps & top straps weren't showing so that creating the feel they are naked!

Sound testing
For our sound in the opening 2 minutes as a group we came to a decision to have a lullaby to help complement the eerie mood and atmosphere. We chose the following the lyrics as they relate to our narrative.
Firstly we arranged to meet a group of keen singers from year 7 at Weald of Kent Grammar to record a lullaby for our horror themed opening. We took the group to the music block, where we found a free recording studio. We informed the group of the lyrics and the way in which we wanted the tune to sound.
We decided to use six different girls who were aged 12. We thought that this was appropriate because of their pitch and tone of voice which created an eerie atmosphere. As well as this, the age group used was appropriate to the narrative of young female victims to show their vulnerability
We chose to do a song to a lullaby tune which often referred to the classic lullaby "Hush little baby". As a group, we decided to do it to this theme as it is a stereotypically horror themed song. To make it less stereotypical and to avoid any copyright laws we ensured to create our own lyrics. Together the tune of this classic song and the voice of young girls, we successfully creating suspense.
We planned to use a microphone recorder, unfortunately this was not available on the day so we improvised and used a high-tech phone. To our surprise it came out clear without background sounds. Therefor we kept this sound footage instead of re-recording with a microphone.

Actress Profiles
For the opening of out film, we have decided to use the three actresses LILY FULTON, MAEVE WIGHAM and JASMINE WARREN. These three girls, constantly play the roles of victimised girls, in which a male has taken in order to use them. The male actor ALFIE SCOPES is seen in both the montage and the opening scene e. g a scene of him removing teeth from one on the girls. The shelves indicate the three girls possessions he has taken e.g. hair locks.
The idea behind using these three actresses were that they were all fairly similar. The use of three average brunette girls, all pale with a lack of makeup to reflect their innocence and vulnerability.
Through out the opening scene of the horror opening, the three girls, will be shown sitting in a chair. The antagonist is taking their teeth however, as this is only the opening scene of a film, the audience don't actually get to see what the teeth are used for.
