the location is suitable for filming the brick garage for the montage and the

Checking
the available light at certain points of the day will allow us to see if it complements
the mood and atmosphere.

The brick wall and the garage door block out

Actress Profiles
For the opening of out film, we have decided to use the three actresses LILY FULTON, MAEVE WIGHAM and JASMINE WARREN. These three girls, constantly play the roles of victimised girls, in which a male has taken in order to use them. The male actor ALFIE SCOPES is seen in both the montage and the opening scene e. g a scene of him removing teeth from one on the girls. The shelves indicate the three girls possessions he has taken e.g. hair locks.
The idea behind using these three actresses were that they were all fairly similar. The use of three average brunette girls, all pale with a lack of makeup to reflect their innocence and vulnerability.
Through out the opening scene of the horror opening, the three girls, will be shown sitting in a chair. The antagonist is taking their teeth however, as this is only the opening scene of a film, the audience don't actually get to see what the teeth are used for.

Lighting testing:
When looking at lighting we had some issues;
- When the light in the garage was on, it made the whole garage too light as shown in the picture below.
- When the light was off the garage became too dark to film.
In the end we decided to have the garage lights off, and then use torches and lights on our phones to create a more eerie and creepy atmosphere.

Our Vision
Colour Palette
This is our colour pallet we have created to convey the colours we want to include in our movie opening. We have chosen the idea to use really dull dark colours to add to the eerie mysterious atmosphere we are looking to create, alongside bold, dashes of colour. We wanted this colour to be red due to the colour of blood, red also represents death, danger, and fear we want to symbolise in our opening. These are stereotypical colours used in horrors. We want to use dimly lit lighting which will contrast the character who will be in white, to make them stand out in the dull negative space around them.

Test of Sound
|
Lullaby
|
Throughout the whole of the
montage we have planned to have a soft lullaby playing in the background sang
by a group of year 7 girls. This helps to create the scary effect and changes
the mood and atmosphere to compliment
the horror themed opening. We have composed our own piece to fit our film
opening basing the lyrics on our narrative. By doing this we aren’t breaking
and copyright rules.
|
|
Heart rate monitor
|
In the narrative part our opening
to complement the sections where the tension rises we are planning on using a
heart rate monitor. By using the increase or decrease of the monitor it will
help build suspense and tension. This helps prepare the audience for the next
shots to come.
|
|
Scratching
|
Scratching sounds are commonly
found to be quite uncomforting and harsh to listen to. This sound will be
effective as the audience can gain a mix of feelings, e.g. disturbed, uneasy,
and distressed. This effect will help build a dramatic atmosphere.
|
|
Screaming
|
Sounds of screams automatically
create sense of danger, for not only the antagonist or the characters within the film but also for the
audience. This is effective as it helps them experiencing the same scenario.
|
|
Footsteps
|
In our opening the use of
footsteps allows the audience to engage a sense of where about the antagonist is. This helps us to get our
bearings around how far or close away they are and whether to feel scared or
not.
|
|
Heavy breathing
|
Opening to heavy breathing often
helps to show the characters comfort zone. Heavy breathing is associated with
discomfort. Fast breathing can show panic un-satisfaction, danger. Slow
breathing can convey the character comfortable, full awareness, safety.

Initial idea 2
Genre- Horror
My groups idea for a horror film opening, was inspired by series
American Horror Story’s. Our main inspiration was the use cinematography of
each small scene, that was constantly changing. We like the idea of having lots
of different quick shots merged together. The opening for the Murder House and
Asylum series both begin with the credits combined with mis-en scene,
cinematography, sound and editing that build up an eerie tension. This
creates a sense of fear for the audience.
| AHS POV Shot |
| AHS Tracking Shot |
| AHS Mid-shot |
The opening
credits to American horror story has non-diegetic music playing over the top of
diegetic sounds, that can be seen as parallel sounds. The non-diegetic music
was very layered at some points however at other points it was just simple
sounds, this builds up tension. Diegetic sound was also used, to help create
atmosphere within an opening, for example sounds of lightening strikes. For our opening It would be a good idea for us
to incorporate diegetic and non-diegetic sound to create the eerie atmosphere
we want.
The
editing in the opening of American Horror Story’s; Murder house and Asylum’s
extremely precise, with no real storyline. The use of quick transitions from
scene-to-scene implies the genre is based on horror. It includes scenes lit dimly
lit however a white object is included in most scenes to grad the audience’s attention.
My group and I are inspired by the range of transitions between scenes and want
to include this type of editing in our work.
